Priorities of Derek Swajanen
Community
For Derek Swajanen, serving as a District Court Judge is not just about legal experience, it's about community. Raised in Marquette County, Derek has dedicated his career to representing the very people he now seeks to serve from the bench. He believes our courts should strengthen the community by balancing accountability with opportunity.
Derek supports responsible alternatives to incarceration when appropriate. He recognizes that jail is costly for taxpayers and not always the most effective solution. When individuals can be treated and supervised while continuing to work and support their families, the entire community benefits. Derek is committed to collaborating with fellow judges and county administrators to ensure our local justice system serves the people of Marquette County first.
Experience
Derek brings extensive courtroom experience handling a wide range of cases involving serious criminal matters, landlord-tenant disputes, traffic violations, and everyday civil disagreements. He understands the complexity of the law and the real-life impact that court decisions have on individuals and families.
He also recognizes two of the greatest challenges facing today's courts — court delays and repeat offenders. Cases that stretch on for months or years undermine the confidence in the justice system. Derek will prioritize timely case management and practical solutions to ensure that cases move efficiently while maintaining fairness.
Dedication
Derek remains actively involved in the evolution of specialty courts and is committed to strengthening existing programs such as Sobriety Court, Veterans Court, and Drug Court, which he will work with to reduce the number of repeat offenders. He also supports establishing a Mental Health Court to address one of the most pressing challenges facing our justice system today.
In every case, Derek uses his experience, while demonstrating integrity, fairness, and dedication. He is prepared to bring balance, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the people of Marquette County as the next District Court Judge.
