Meet Derek Swajanen

Derek Swajanen is a lifelong resident of Marquette County and a respected attorney with almost 30 years of courtroom experience. Derek understands the values, people, and responsibilities that shape the local justice system. Now a candidate for Marquette County District Court Judge, he is committed to bringing fairness, integrity, and dedication to the bench.

As a respected attorney, Derek has served Marquette County from multiple perspectives within the courtroom. He represented indigent individuals, handled homicides, and high profile cases as an assistant prosecuting attorney, and has been involved in complex litigation. Over almost 30 years, Derek has gained the experience and judgment needed to preside over the broad range of cases that come before the District Court. Derek handles the same cases heard in District Court, making him uniquely qualified to step into the role as the next Marquette County District Court Judge.

Derek is committed to Marquette County well beyond the courtroom. For 25 years, he coached American Legion Baseball, mentoring young athletes who are now responsible members of the community. He recently founded the Powerhouse Baseball and Softball Facility to further support youth development and currently serves as head coach of the Marquette Senior High School Softball team. His coaching, volunteering, and supporting local fundraisers, has shown that he is deeply invested in the community he proudly calls home.

Derek and his wife, Dana, raised four daughters in Marquette County. Derek now embraces his newest role as “Papa” to his grandson, who resides in Negaunee. Watching his family grow in the community where he was born and raised reinforces his commitment to serving Marquette County with honor, fairness, and respect.

Because District Court serves the most people in Marquette County, the District Judge makes the biggest impact upon the local community. Derek Swajanen is the right person to bring experience, integrity, and a lifelong dedication to the bench.
